Gosta be productive.

I am trying to be productive at work and last week I was pretty bad. I was productive, but browsed TPS more than I wanted to, but I did get my work done. I have decided that if I want to take a break I'll check TPS once or twice per day, but I think for the most part I will load up an online book like The Federalist and read a bit. This site isn't bad either, I can always take my sweet time composing a journal entry.

More of an update later hopefully. I'm too spotty at this site, but a lot has gone on in my life since I last updated.

Under pressure

  • I NEEED a new vehicle. I mean I seriously need one, my blazer is pretty much dead. I took it in for the VA inspection and it failed miserably, it has an exhaust leak and a ball joint is loose. I am pretty certain if I repaired it, it would still be worth less than what I paid for the repairs. Plus I just let the registration expire.
I am thinking of going with a Mitsubishi Montero Sport. There are a couple of Monteros listed on autotrader that have low mileage and are around 12,000. I'll see if I can bargain them down. One in Rockville has the TVs in the back, not that I would ever use them, but that's badass. Well, maybe I can use that to bargain a 2WD one w/ 8K less mileage down.
  • Also, I really have to cancel a bunch of shit and take my cable down to the very basic. I mean, I like having this extra tier of channels and these movie channels, but I just really shouldn't be shelling out the money for them. I think the only one I am really going to miss is the IFC. Man, they play some great stuff on IFC, but I really really need to control my expenses and start paying down this home equity loan. I also have to cancel the Earthlink account that is basically used for collecting spam and anything else that I may have subscribed to and forgotten about.
  • Fucking telemarketers, they call relentlessly from 9AM until 9PM. I have been tempted to put myself on the do not call list, but that would conflict with my libertarian views that the DNC list is not the governments job. Instead I have put a bid on a telezapper on eBay. It'll cost me less than $10 and it's a free market solution. Hurray for capitalism.

School and all that jazz.

So according to my friend Kevin, if you're a GMU undergrad then your chances of getting into the GMU law school are slim to none. Hahaha, I guess they don't think much of the undergraduate program. It was my first choice, but I was also going to apply to Georgetown and George Washington plus anything else that's within commuting distance. But I think if I do exceptional on the LSATs I'll be able to get into GMU.

Also, one of my goals for the next year is to get a house or a townhouse so that Maverick has a yard and so I can rent out some of the rooms. With this plan of law school, I should probably look in the Arlington area, since that's where GMU's law school is located, it's close to Georgetown and by a metro stop. It would be hard to lose there. I'd roll the equity from my condo into the new place, so I figure I could get something for around $400k and not have to strain financially. Right now the market is pretty flat, which I guess is good since it doesn't reduce my equity, but it also doesn't reduce the price of places I'd want to buy. Another bonus is I wouldn't have to pay a condo fee, but my property taxes would be higher. Anyway, I do need a job first before I can consider that.

The more I think about it, the more it seems to be a good idea

I have been thinking about this idea of law school (specifically GMU's) and the more I think about it the better of an idea it seems to be.

First off I want to go back and get an upper level degree. I had considered econ and an MBA, but the econ degree is impractical and I don't exactly know what I'd do with an MBA. GMU's law school is heavily integrated with their econ department even to the point of offering a law degree that focuses on economics. I wouldn't go for the law-econ degree because that seems more aimed towards policy makers, but I'd certainly get more upper level econ education than most other schools.
Second, I am interested in property stuff, not just the economics behind it, but the legal side behind it. Ideally I would want to own a few places and rent them out and a strong legal background would help me out a ton with that. I also think I would enjoy getting paid to help people out in that area.
Third many of the books on my list of stuff to read are major foundations for our legal system. I want to read Locke and Hayek before I go back to school and they wrote a lot about or heavily influenced our legal system.

So I am going to get some LSAT study material and start dedicating some free time to doing some studying for this and then I will take it in December and rock it out.

This might be the greatest* music video ever made

It has everything: cowboys, kung fu, robots, lasers, an aussie looking bad guy and even shots of intense hawks.

Oh snap

So fairly recently I got a friend request on myspace. Usually when I see that I go "oh great, what cam whore, spam bot or band wants to add me?" and go check. Well it was an attractive chick so I figured she would be a cam whore, so I checked out her profile just to make sure. She didn't have a link to her webcam, had a fairly normal looking profile and is located in my town so I added her.
Before I could message her, she sent me a message saying she's new to town and was asking me what kind of cool stuff to do around the area and I saw she enjoys hiking with her dog (!!!) so I suggested a couple of parks and we had a couple of nice emails back and forth about random stuff. After the third exchange I told her I wanted to have a phone conversation and asked for her number. I called her up last night and we had a nice phone conversation for a few hours (I was only going to call her up for a short call). So, she seems normal, outgoing, fun and intelligent. I'm booked solid for the rest of this week and will be gone all next week, so we're going to get together for a couple of drinks after I get back. I got to stay calm, cool and collected.

Also, can't wait until my trip to MA next week. It's gonna be hella fun.

Oh man.

So many of my friends are getting Sam Jackson calls tomorrow.

As for school...

So I ended up with an A- in Discrete Math. My GPA is a 3.4 and I am happy with that.

Also, I have been slow to apply to jobs. I haven't used anything other than Monster so far. Sometimes it's a huge pain in the ass when you have to re-type all your info for a company. It slows things down a lot.

Oh yay, more spending of money I don't have

So I went over to buy V for Vendetta (the more expensive delux edition too) and I ended up buying a reissue copy of The Searchers. Both are totally worth it though, The Searchers is one of the best Westerns I have ever seen and I am glad to finally own it.

Some random stuff

I'm all done with school, finally. I ended up with a D in Calc 3, but oh well it doesn't matter. That part of my life is over with and now it's time to move on. But now I also need to move on employment-wise, so now that I have plenty of free time I have zero excuses for not sending out my resume and going on as many recumes as possible.

Ok, so I can pull out a C for Calc

I don't even really have to do a hail mary, all I have to do is get an 85 or higher on the final and I have a C for calc. Of course I also can't get any higher than a C. But I'll take a C.

School's out (almost) for ever

Thursday I am all done with school...FOREVER...ok, well forever in the sense that KISS is doing a farewell tour probably. I think I'll do well in discrete math, but probably fail Calc. Se la vie, either way I'm still done.

So I was looking for something to watch on TV and came across a show on Discovery called something like "Everything You Need To Know Aboot Global Warming with Tom Brokaw." I've come to a couple of conclusions from watching this:

1. Tom Brokaw is a smarmy douche who thinks he's better than you. SARSLY Tom, someone needs to beat the smarm off your face.

2. Showing pictures of serene nature, freak natural disasters and human pollution is an acceptable way of making a point. Why? Because A will lead to B because of C, no matter if B and C are fairly uncommon.

3. The less context the better. Tom kept throwing numbers at me, which I am sure were gauged towards maximum impact (IE Minimum context). What does 5 million tons of CO2 mean? I dunno, it sounds like a lot, I sure as hell couldn't lift 5 million tons. That must mean it's bad. But wait, what is that in terms of the average CO2 produced by a beef cow, or a volcano, or the oxygen produced by a sq acre of forest? I always try to be weary of extreme sounding numbers with no context no matter if they are with or against positions I hold.

Of course Brokaw's solution is heavy handed government intervention and investment in wild technologies which are often expensive because they're energy intensive to produce. Tom accepted the Kyoto treaty as word of God and acted surprised that we hadn't moved to accept it. It's sad that today using the heavy hand of government is considered "erring on the side of caution."

DAMN YOU TRIPLE INTEGRALS!!

Ugh, Calc is giving me grief big-time. I am going through these problems and I keep getting very different answers than the book gives me. I am going to try to get to work fairly early tomorrow so I can go straight over to school and hit up the math tutoring center (me asking for help = very rare) so maybe a math grad student (hopefully a busty one) can explain to me what I am doing wrong with setting up the intervals.

Mon, Jul. 10th, 2006, 12:19 pm
Haha, that didn't quite work out

I woke up at 9:30, then went back to sleep for another half hour and then another half hour and got up at 10:30. I don't want to be making excuses or trying to rationalize it, but it's easy to justify sleeping in later when the alternative is to come into a job that I'm very unfond of. Even still, the extra time after work would be excellent for doing some studying for my test tomorrow.

Is it wrong to fax out your resume to new potential employers from your current employer?

Mon, Jul. 10th, 2006, 12:10 am
I woke up at 1 in the afternoon today.

That's just not good, it completely fucked up my whole day. I didn't get to the gym, I felt a little emo and I haven't been very productive.
I had decided no later than 10:30 from now on and on the weekdays I get up at 7:45 when I have to be into work, but now I think 9:30 when I don't have to work. We'll see how long this lasts.

Bleargh

I feel good, I feel motivated, I feel like I want to improve myself and become a better person...then I come to work. I don't know what it is about this place that seems to bring out the worst in me. Anyway, I am not just bitching because I have taken some steps towards finding a new job.

I know I can do better

Well, I didn't do so well on my final for Real Estate Finance, I got a 70 on the final ended up getting a B for the course when before I was on the edge of the A zone. A B is a very good grade, but in order to get my 3.5 that means I need to do better in the two math classes I am taking.
However, I have been slacking for these two math classes. I got my first Discrete Math test back and got a 55% on it!!! Ouch. I thought I knew the stuff, but apparently not that well. Fortunately this one only counts for 20% of the grade and the homework and quizes count for 30% total. If I get in the B range for the next test and the final and continue to do well on the quizzes (I think I have already had my two throw-away quizzes) I can get in the B range. However, this means that I need to do all the homework and extra credit shortly after it's assigned rather than the day before the test and not doing any extra credit.
As for Calc, I got a B on my first test and I didn't think I did so well. I had the 2nd test last night, but I know I didn't do nearly as well as I did on that first one, mostly because I was way behind on the homework and two of the problems covered stuff that was assigned for homework (fortunately one of the tests is throw away). However, I think if I do the homework shortly after it's assigned, then I have a shot at an A.

Yes indeedy

So I have wanted to post some more in here, some of the more intimate stuff, but I just seem to forget to come here when I am online goofing around. Plus if I did an update it would be uber long. So, the short is that I am working on finishing up school by the end of July and just trying to improve myself overall. Hope everyone is doing well.
